David J. Marchant. I have been keenly interested in virology ever since I read Laurie Garrett’s book, The Coming Plague, in 1998. Incredible reading, highly recommended, and quite prescient of the current COVID19 pandemic. I completed my undergraduate degree in Physical Biochemistry at Simon Fraser University and took off to the UK with my wife, Sara. While in the UK I read Gina Kolata’s book ‘Flu’ that inspired me to learn more about respiratory viruses. I completed my PhD on HIV1 and HIV2 at UCL and just before I finished I met Laurie Garret and she signed my beloved copy of ‘Plague.’ I moved to Vancouver to be a postdoctoral fellow at St. Paul’s hospital, UBC to study cardio-respiratory viruses.
