Dr. Poonam Mathur is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Institute of Human Virology (University of Maryland School of Medicine). She completed her medical education and master’s in public health at Nova Southeastern University, Internal Medicine residency and chief residency at Penn State/Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, and Infectious Diseases fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. Mathur’s interest in Hepatitis C research began early in her infectious diseases fellowship, when she was tasked with implementing hepatitis C treatment projects in Rwanda and India. Since then, under the mentorship of Dr. Shyam Kottilil, she completed a K12 award from the NHLBI and has continued her translational research by focusing on the cellular mechanisms responsible for accelerated aging in people with HIV. She is also a primary care physician for patients living with HIV, while providing infectious diseases consultation for the Greenbaum Cancer Center and Bone Marrow Transplant units at University of Maryland Medical Center. In addition, Dr. Mathur serves on the Executive Council for Women in Medicine and Science and was elected to the Global Virus Network Rising Start Mentorship Program
