Ralf Bartenschlager
University of Heidelberg, Germany
Ralf Bartenschlager is a virologist and cell biologist, who started his scientific career by studying the replication cycle of the hepatitis B virus. Thereafter, he entered the field of RNA viruses (mainly hepatitis C virus and flaviviruses) to research the interaction between these viruses and their host cells. A special focus is put on the replication strategies of these RNA viruses and to use obtained results for the development of antiviral therapy. Another focus is the control of infection by these viruses by the innate immune response and viral countermeasures. A key technology used for these studies is light and electron microscopy approaches.
